Preparing for a new start: Kingsfield School is due to become an academy in September
Ian Frost will be taking over from Steve Longton who steps down at the end of this month for personal reasons.
Mr Frost will be coming to Kingsfield from Highworth Warneford School in Swindon.
Kingsfield is set to become the fifth member of the Cabot Learning Foundation in September. It will be a fresh start for the school which has around 1,000 pupils and was given a notice to improve by Ofsted inspectors last year.
Kingsfield became a comprehensive school in 1970 when it replaced the old Kingswood Grammar School.
There are currently three academies in East Bristol: the John Cabot Academy (JCA), the Bristol Brunel Academy (BBA), formerly known as Speedwell School, and the Bristol Metropolitan Academy (BMA), which was previously known as Whitefield Fishponds School.
They are sponsored by Rolls Royce PLC and the University of the West of England (UWE).
David Carter, executive principal of the Cabot Learning Federation, said: "Over the past two years all three academies have produced their best ever GCSE results with BBA being the most improved school in Bristol and BMA making the biggest improvement in an academy in the UK with an overall leap of 43 per cent to 83 per cent of students gaining five A-C grades in 2010.
"On May 1, we look forward to welcoming Hans Price Academy, (HPA) in Weston-super-Mare (formerly Wyvern School) to the federation when they become our fourth partner school.
"We look forward to welcoming Kingsfield School, who will become the fifth member of our family when they become an academy on September 1.
"This new model of school leadership is leading to new opportunities and improved performance for the 4,000 students and 500 staff who learn and work in our academies."

Hi Becky, this is good news for the Kingsfield School, the Cabot Learning Federation is transforming our area or the better, hopefully local people will start to come here to send their children to these schools instead what we experienced several years ago where people were moving towards Thornbury and Keysnsham to send their children to schools. BMA still has lots of vacancies for 2011 intake, this is a good investment for local people... less pupil to teachers which will surely reflect in more one to one time allocation. I used to teach 1 to 12 and I found this worked really well. I was interested to learn from a friend who teaches in Bristol Cathedral School http://tinyurl.com/3lf9smq which was formally a private school but is now an academy that they recruit from all across Bristol and follow the same pupil recruitment criteria as John Cabot Academy and they too are in a partnership with schools in the central area and Clifton. The Kingswood Partnership covers the other existing secondary schools in the South Gloucestershire part of the wider Kingswood Community and is making a difference as well. http://tinyurl.com/3kkx5hr
