Would you pay to fill in a Kingswood pothole?

The awful potholes in and around Kingswood following our bitterly cold winter have sparked a lot of debate on Kingswood People - so I thought I'd tell you what people in a village in Germany have come up with.

In Niederzimmern, near Leipzig, you can BUY a hole for €50 and in return the authorities will repair it - and put a personal message on top.

The cash-strapped village has put its many potholes up for sale as a way of financing road repairs. Months of severe winter weather have left as many as 40 per cent of Germany's highways and byways badly damaged.

Do you think this idea would work in South Glos where more than 1,200 potholes have been repaired since the end of January, with many more left to fill?

And what message would you like displayed on your very own filled-in hole?

The problem isn't really down to the salt, it doesn't help of course, but the main problem is simply the ice. The water gets into the cracks of the road and freezes which causes it to expand and crack the bond between the stones. Once traffic returns to it, it comes out in clumps.

This isn't such a problem on properly surfaced roads, such as the ring road, but instead on roads that are surface dressed (this is where they simlpy spray the surface and chuck a load of chippings on) Its the cheapest option but its not great. It the same stuff that melts and sticks to our tyres on hot summer days.

Buy cheap, buy twice. Or 7 or 8 times in this case.

Don't think it will Becky.  Saw this on the news and thought it was a good idea, but not here.  As Kingswood RFC said don't we already pay for it?  Course what doesn't help the roads is the salt that is put down, it erodes them.  Wonder if it's worth for the future snows to look at a better way to metl the snow and to save our roads?
