Kingswood's Labour MP Roger Berry, who is defending his seat at the General Election, has called on Liberal Democrat supporters to consider voting for him as the two parties share common economic ground.

Roger, who has been the MP since 1992, appeals to Lib Dems in the spring edition of the Labour newsletter Kingswood News distributed to homes in the area.

He writes: "Kingswood is a key marginal constituency - always a close contest between Labour and Conservative candidates.

"So what should Liberal Democrat supporters to in Kingswood? This is of course a matter for them and I respect the decisions that all voters make.

"However, I would like to invite Liberal Democrats to consider supporting me for three reasons.

"We share common ground on economic policy - we know, as Vince Cable (the Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor)  has said, that Tory plans to rush into rapid cuts in public spending would be folly and could push the economy back into recession and create an even larger budget deficit.

"We support the Bill to offer voters a referendum on the Alternative Vote System - while the Tories are opposed to any changes in the electoral system. And like most Lib Dems, I oppposed the war in Iraq - whilst most Tories were solidly behind George Bush.

"If we beat the Tories we will have our referendum on the Alternative Vote and at the next election we can all vote for our first preference."

Roger has signed up as a member of Kingswood People. The Liberal Democrat candidate Sally FitzHarris and Conservative candidate Chris Skidmore are also members - so feel free to raise issues with them here on the website.

Are you a Lib Dem supporter? Would you consider voting for Roger? Let us know.

Lib dems will want some of their polices to go through and so they know they will be asked for help from Labour or the tories.  Course they were against the budget all opposition are, that's why they are the opposition.  One side say, white, the other black.  They add like school children bickering back and forth.

Why should Lib Dems vote for the Labour Party when they do NOT agree with their policies ?? Look at Vince Cable's reponse to the Labour government's Budget. The hidden tax rise which will occur as a consequence of freezing tax allowances will hit millions, including the poor. Contrast this with Lib Dem plans to exclude anyone earning under £10,000 from paying any income tax. Lib Dems want fairer taxes!

Everyone knows the lib dems won't get in, not for many, many years yet, it will be Labour and tory battling it out, (for several elections to come) and both will want lib dems on their side to push through policies, (unless either side gets an overall majority which doesn't look like at present).  That is why Roger has suggested to the lib dems to help.  It makes sense just as the tories ask for the Northern irish parties to help them with voting.  The lib dems will say we will help as long as we can get this done or that done etc, it's political, 'you scratch my back I scratch yours'.

Roger you can’t have it both ways: either you are standing as a Labour candidate or you’re not.  If not, leave the party and stand as an Independent.
The Labour party has got us into the worst economic mess for over 70 years, has increased the gap between richest and poorest in society, has led us into an illegal war in Iraq, and been a government whose hallmarks are spin and secrecy.
And with regard to your enthusiasm for PR, Labour promised to look at a fairer voting system in 1997. Why has it taken you so long?
The only way to get Liberal Democrat policies – a fairer tax system, targeted help for primary schools, a green road out of recession, and cleaner politics with the right to sack corrupt MPs, is to vote Liberal Democrat.
