Do we need a parish council?

WHILST the media has been focussing on the elections for a police commissioner and Bristol mayor, decisions were also being made that could have a major affect on the residents of Kingswood and Staple Hill.
South Gloucestershire Council is consulting on whether to establish a new parish council for Kingswood and Staple Hill so it is vital that local people make their voices heard by taking part in the consultation, which closes on Monday morning.
It would be awful if such a major decision was made by a small proportion of residents.
I must report that in my nine years as a local councillor no constituent has ever raised the need for another layer of government with me. When local people were last asked they voted against the idea, but this could count for nothing if current residents do not take part this week.
At a time when everyone is feeling the pinch and the council is having to cut important services, this is a strange priority. I therefore urge Kingswood and Staple Hill residents to have their say. The consultation is available via the council website at www.southglos.gov.uk/cgr – with a link to 'Unparished Area (Kingswood and Staple Hill)'.
