Came second in the popular vote
Analysis of the election result shows that Labour came second in the popular vote in South Gloucestershire, receiving 56,858 votes (30%), over 8,000 more than the 48,571 received by Lib Dem candidates (25½%). Labour increased its vote from 2007 by over 50%. Despite coming third, the Lib Dems hold 21 seats to Labour’s 15.
Commenting, Labour leader Councillor Roger Hutchinson (Lab, Filton) said:
“Four years ago the Conservatives won 34 seats and took minority control of the council. The Tories won exactly the same number last week so nothing has changed in that arithmetic.
We are renewed in numbers and in vigour and will stand up for public services and for those who depend on them. Coming second in the popular vote makes us even more determined to make sure our voice in heard. We will be speaking up for many thousands of local voters.
We have clear differences with the other parties in terms of the future direction of the council. We are committed to keeping services in house where possible, and we will continue to hold the ruling Conservatives to account and seek to influence policy in favour of priority neighbourhoods.”
