Upgrade for "mud bath" footpath in Kingswood

A Kingswood footpath described by local councillors as "more like a mud bath" is set to be given a proper tarmac surface after a long-running campaign.

The existing footpath linking Lavers Close and Lintham Drive in Kingswood runs across a section of open space owned by South Gloucestershire Council. After housing developer David Wilson Homes built 60 new homes as an extension to Lintham Drive, the path which originally gave access just to the open space from Lavers Close has since become much more used.

The path is, however, no more than a track across the grass and in wet conditions rapidly becomes very muddy. One of the local councillors for the area has said that over the winter months in particular the path can be virtually impassable.

Councillor Gareth Manson (Labour, Woodstock) said:

"Because there is no formal path here, when it gets wet the path becomes more like a mud bath. We have been pressing the Council to install a proper path ever since the new homes on Lintham Drive were built. Finally that pressure seems to have paid off."

Part of the delay in building a proper path is that the Council were waiting for electricity company Western Power Distribution to check that a new cable buried across the open space had been installed correctly. That work has now been carried out paving the way for the new path to be constructed.

When the path is constructed, the Council also intends to build a path connecting a nearby children's play area to the main paths running through the open space.
