NORTH Bristol president Ken Rendell, pictured, this week celebrated his 70th birthday – and his 54th season with the Western Counties North club.

Ken, who was treasurer from 1976-1984, and chairman from 1983-2006, played in 696 games for North (mainly at scrum-half) and was elected a life member in 1977.

He is one of only a handful of men who have appeared for North at their three different homes – Greenway School, Woodlands Lane and Oaklands, the club's base since 1986.

Ken said: "Being involved with the club has become a way of life, and it's something I can't change!"

The champagne corks will be popping again at a special dinner at the Marriott on May 18 to celebrate North's 80th anniversary.

Sam Astall, meanwhile, made his 100th appearance for North Bristol.

However, he finished on the losing side as the 3rds slipped 38-7 at home to Cleve.Matt Parcel's try being converted by Dan Harris.

Kingswood are searching for local bands who are interested in performing at their club on a Saturday night – and challenging for a cash prize of £250.

Chairman Ian Kirley hopes to find five groups willing to play for up to an hour on different weekends throughout the season.

Club members will mark each band out of ten in a secret ballot. And the group with the highest average will earn £250 and be asked to perform at Kingswood's end-of-season dinner.

Kirley said: "We think there are plenty of bands out there who want to be heard, while we can provide the audience."

St Mary's 3rds salvaged a 19-19 draw at Frampton Cotterell with a late penalty. The home side's tries came from Barry Whitehead, skipper Kev Atkinson and Mike Weaver with Tom Bowen Hall landing two conversions.

Tries from Jon Bishop (2), Martin Lewis and Geoff Green saw Keynsham 3rds to a 22-5 home defeat of Culverhay in Somerset Two North.

Brothers Callum and Lewis Dicker helped Bristol Telephones edge Ashley Down 2nds 10-5, with dad Bob making a 15-minute cameo appearance at prop. Callum and full-back Mike Smith touched down for Phones with another teenager, scrum-half Ashley Jordan, taking the man-of-the-match plaudits.

The funeral took place yesterday of Godfrey Heaven, a popular three-quarter for Thornbury who died suddenly at the age of only 53.
