A 42-year-old man was arrested – with the aid of tracking software – following a burglary in St George, Bristol at the weekend.

Police were called to a home in St George at about 4.30am on Saturday (February 9). Officers combed the area in search of the offender who had fled the scene.

They were alerted to the fact that one of the items stolen - an iPad with tracking software - was showing its location as Charlton Road.

On Charlton Road police spotted a man on a mountain bike carrying a large shopping bag full of items. When officers asked the man to stop he made off. Police pursued him into Heathcote Road where he was detained.

A police spokesman said: "This swift arrest just goes to show the value of these tracking software programmes and we strongly recommend that people with smart phones, laptops and tablet devices make use of them.

"Having your gadgets stolen will be a huge inconvenience but remember it's not just the item that's stolen it is all the data it holds as well. This could be contact numbers, precious photographs or important documents. The cost to your wallet and your time could be considerable."
