The Labour councillor in South Gloucestershire's most marginal ward has welcomed the selection of two colleagues to contest Rodway with him next May. Councillor Michael Bell is the sole Labour representative in the ward – which covers most of Mangotsfield and the northern part of Kingswood – where a Conservative squeaked in by just 34 votes at the last election in May 2011.

Local party members have selected Sandie Davis and Eric Hargrave to work alongside Michael as the election approaches. This election will be the first time that Sandie and Eric have fought for a seat on South Gloucestershire Council.
Sandie Davis has been a foster carer for over 30 years and specialises in fostering children with a disability or special need. She has lived in the area for over 30 years, with her children all attending Mangotsfield School. She serves on the committee of the Bristol Area Downs Syndrome Support Group and organises a social group for young adults called Down 2 Earth. She is a governor at Warmley Park School and a parent/carer representative on the Learning Disability Partnership Board.
Eric Hargrave has worked in Business Development for various internet and technology companies since graduating. In his spare time he has worked for a number of conservation charities and recently drummed up investment and support to renovate and restore the old "Whiteladies Picture House" cinema in Bristol. He pledges to work with planners and residents to ensure that new homes and businesses do not come at the loss of great Victorian buildings or green areas.
Michael Bell has been a Rodway councillor since 2011, having served 5 years in the Royal Air Force, and 2 years living in Australia and New Zealand. Michael was employed in local engineering companies and finally the NHS and has been a Trade Union representative in 3 different workplaces. He has also served as a governor at 3 local schools, and manages a Downs League football team. On the Council he is Labour's Lead Member on the Development Control (East) and Public Rights of Way committees.
Councillor Michael Bell says:
"Labour has a strong team for Rodway with a good range of different skills and experiences. The scale of government cuts makes this a very difficult time for local government, and South Gloucestershire Council is already having to make tough decisions on cutting or charging for services. Next May we need to elect a Labour government, with Jo McCarron as our MP in Kingswood, as well as more Labour councillors to stand up for hard-pressed communities and fight to reverse the impact of Tory policies. I have no doubt that Sandie and Eric will make a great contribution as my fellow councillors in Rodway Ward."
