AN MP has called for greater safety measures on a Hanham road where a married couple died after being thrown off their tandem.

Chris Skidmore, who represents Kingswood, is working with residents in Lower Hanham Road and adjourning Hanham Road to petition South Gloucestershire Council for greater road safety measures along the roads.
Ross and Clare Simons, right, from Fishponds, died in Lower Hanham Road on Sunday, January 27 after their tandem bicycle was hit by a car.
After the death many residents spoke to The Post to say they had witnessed many other collisions on the sloping and winding road.
Mr Skidmore decided to launch the campaign after being approached by resident Michelle Wyatt.
He said: "This area has witnessed a number of accidents over the last few years, in particular the tragic fatal accident that took place last month.
"I know speaking to local residents that many local families and those who attend the nearby primary schools are very concerned.
"Together with local residents and the local councillors – John Goddard, Heather Goddard and June Bamford – as the local MP I am arranging for a petition to be handed in to the council, which will strongly urge them to take prompt action and investigate all possibilities of improving road safety on Lower Hanham Road and Hanham Road."
Letters are now being sent out to residents in the road and anyone who wishes to sign the petition is asked to email Mr Skidmore at chris.skidmore. mp@parliament.uk or call his office on 0117 908 1524.

ReportHmm, better safety. How about locking up people disqualified from driving ? After all it was not the speed limit on the road or parking restrictions that caused the accident but a person already disqualified from driving and who had no insurance to drive.

ReportMotorists, slow the hell down.. show consideration around pedestrians and cyclists..
the sooner we get a 20mph speed limit right across the city, the better

ReportI live in Tabernacle Rd where these roads meet and have witnessed far too many accidents here, they try to cross the junction too fast. Something has to be done but I fear it won't as we have been campaigning for years. sadly 2 more people had to sacrifice their lives to get it brought to peoples attention again.

ReportAt long, long last, this road has been a death trap for as long as I can remember, surely the answer on how to improve everyone's safety is to STOP THE PARKING, I stand to be corrected but Hanham Road is the only road I know where when two buses meet one has to stop,or MOUNT THE PAVEMENT because the width of the road has been reduced by parked cars, and yet Moravian Road a one way street as wide as Hanham Road (with an exit for buses, and taxis only) has double yellow lines and is regularly patrolled by parkng wardens.
Double yellows the ENTIRE LENGTH of Hanham Road NOW.
