Rovers win 4 - 2 on penalties

Bristol Rovers are through to the second round of the Championship side Carling Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory over Watford at the Memorial Stadium last night.

The Pirates' 4-2 triumph on penalties came after extra time failed to separate the teams with the score locked at 1-1.

The visitors took the lead after just two minutes, thanks to a goal by Marvin Sordell, but it wasn't long before Matt Harrold put Rovers back on level terms and it stayed that way as the game went into extra time.

Mustapha Carayol scored the winning kick after Carl Dickinson and John Eustace saw Rovers' keeper Scott Bevan save their penalties.

Manager Paul Buckle made no changes, sticking to the side that earned a 0-0 draw with Macclesfield at the weekend.

The Pirates will now visit Leyton Orient in the second round next Tuesday night.

And their next League game is against Hereford at home this Saturday.
